FIRE STATION 41

Since this station serves a variety of needs for our community I
wanted to express this through the painting. The first thing I noticed
was the different dynamic a ‘double’ station. There are two crews,
twice the people inside a large fire station, plus a Chief, so the
possibility of a busy day increases.

The fire truck with ladder extended embodies drama, such a
necessary and purposeful reaction to the fire. To see the machinery
in action and fire fighters putting water on the fire firsthand is
awe-inspiring.

Since the meth lab problem has become rampant in our city, I illustrated components that might be used to make the methamphetamine in front of a fire fighter suited up in a hazardous material protection uniform. I was on a ride- along with fire fighters called to the scene of a residential fire, which was in reality a meth lab fire and saw firsthand how unassuming a meth house can be. And what a drain on our community cleaning up the mess is.

This neighborhood has a number of adult foster care facilities. Before this residency I had no idea the integral part Portland Fire and Rescue played in the health care needs of many people in our community. I was stuck by the respect and compassion the fire fighters have for these elderly clients every time they are called. And although many of the healthcare calls were for senior citizens, people of all ages are clients. The effect of lack of health care insurance on the 911 systems was news to me, and cause for anguish.

The fire fighter enjoyment of the practical joke and general love of a good story came through loud and clear at this fire station. The kitchen was the heart of the station and the natural place to gather, with so many people for each meal the preparation is more intense, and livelier with chopping and conversation. The meals are such an important time at the fire station, the ritual of gathering together, eating and talking, especially when you never know if you will finish the meal before a call come in.
